Cat Stevens Answers 20 Questions

I've just spoken to Cat Stevens. A much happier, cheerful and more contented Cat than I spoke with just before he was taken ill nearly a year ago. He only just got up, which made his smiling face and sparkling eyes all the more remarkable. We chatter for ages and he answered some questions.

  • How does it feel being back on the scene again?
  • Very exciting, like starting at the bottom again.
  • Is it in fact like starting over again?
  • It's a bit safer than that.
  • Are we going to see a new Cat?art3b.JPG (5580 bytes)
  • I'm always changing.
  • Are you still writing as much?
  • More, I've written about 40 songs while I've been ill.
  • Do you still live with your parents?
  • No, I've moved out now, I've got a flat in London.
  • Do you have a car?
  • I've got a white Mercedes, the one I've always had.
  • What sort of person do you say you are?
  • I've learnt a lot about myself while I've been ill, and I've decided I used to be too off-handish with people. I've gone through a change and I see everything more clearly now. I used to be a very jealous person, nut I've ironed that out.
  • Is there anything you dislike about yourself?
  • If someone hurts or upsets me I bear a grudge against them, and I feel I must pay them back.
  • Are you easy to live with?
  • I think so, I'm pretty easy going.
  • Are you religious?
  • Not really, not religious as we know it.
  • Are you superstitious?
  • I suppose I am, but I try to get over it.
  • What, if you could, would you do outside of music?
  • I'd be an inventor of something in medicine.
  • What is your first memory?
  • All I can remember of when I was very young is the disbelief that I would ever grow as big as everyone around me. It really worried me.
  • What do you spend most your money on?
  • I'm not a big spender. I like going to restaurants, and I still have my clothes made.
  • Anything in the world you'd like to change?
  • I'd like to do away with politicians.
  • Is there anyone you admire?
  • Julius Caesar. I wouldn't like have been him, to much power, but he was a great man.
  • What would you do if you won a million pounds?
  • I'd count it, then I'd buy a yacht, get some musicians, lots of champagne and food, a few friends and out to the sun for one month.
  • Do you have any recurring dreams?
  • I use to have a dream about two blank pages and two bricks that kept coming to the middle of the pages and hitting each other. The bricks got more and more and when they hit each other I was really scared.
  • Are you ambitious?
  • I want to write an hour long piece of music for an orchestra but using lots of electronic sounds as well.
  • Is there any artist you'd like to write music for?
If Leonard Bernstein phoned up and asked me to write something, I'd be more than excited!!!

art3a.JPG (5408 bytes)AFTER nine months off the scene beautiful Cat Stevens is back.

It was last January that he was taken ill, and since then he's spent three months in a TB hospital in Surrey, breathing the good fresh country air.

During those three months and during his convalescent time he's been doing a lot of thinking and a lot of writing. As he told me: "There wasn't much else to do."

But he's better now, and he's got a head full of lovely songs. I'm sure you've all heard the first of his new batch. It's called Here Comes My Wife and Lux have played it a lot. So if you haven't heard it, take 100 lines!
